Visit the Jardin Majorelle

The Jardin Majorelle in the Moroccan city of Marrakech is the most beautiful garden in the city. Created by a painter and embellished by a fashion designer, it looks like a colorful painting.

The Jardin Majorelle (French for "Garden Majorelle") is located in the Moroccan city of Marrakech and is arguably the most beautiful garden in the whole city. 650,000 visitors use the facility each year to relax amidst the colorful splendor.

In contrast to the gardens of Agdal and Menara, both of which were created in the 12th century by Almohad rulers and are listed as World Heritage by UNESCO, the Majorelle Garden originated many centuries later.

In 1919, when Morocco was still under the rule of the French, the French painter Jacques Majorelle settled in Marrakech. Four years later, he expanded his art beyond painting and created the beautiful Jardin Majorelle. His visual arts are now almost forgotten, but his magnificent garden is well known and allows Jacques Majorelle to live on.

In the Jardin Majorelle 300 different plant species thrive from all five continents of the earth, predominantly there are nearly 2,000 cactus and 400 palm species, papyrus, bamboo and the bright violet Bougainvillea. In the midst of the green idyll there are 15 different species of birds, all of them native to North Africa, and fish and turtles live in small ponds. Since 2000, the Jardin Majorelle has been equipped with an automatic irrigation system that makes their work a lot easier for the 20 gardeners who cultivate the idyllic gardens.

The legacy of Yves Saint Laurent
Since 1947, the Jardin Majorelle has been open to the public, and in 1980 the well-known French designer Yves Saint Laurent bought it together with his partner Pierre Bergé. The latter founded in 1997 "The Majorelle Trust", a foundation that from then on took care of the continued existence of the garden of paradise and protects him from being wild. Until his retirement from the fashion business in 2002, the Jardin Majorelle inspired the world-famous designer for his collections, as evidenced by his floral patterns. Thereafter, Laurent lived in the villa "Saf Saf" in his beloved garden and after his death in 2008, his ashes were scattered among the roses of the Jardin Majorelle. A memorial stone still reminds of him today.

Museum of Islamic Art of Marrakech
The legacies of the two great names from the past of the Jardin Majorelle can be found in the Museum of Islamic Art, which is located in the former villa "Saf Saf" in the middle of the gardens.

The Museum of Islamic Art is located in the Majorelle Garden in Marrakech, Morocco -

Besides works of art on canvas, jewelery and ceramics by the founder Jacques Majorelle, the brightly blue-painted museum also includes fashion designs by Yves Saint Laurent.

Tip: The museum requires additional admission, but this should not deter anyone from viewing.

Visit the Jardin Majorelle
The Jardin Majorelle is an overwhelming painting of fantastic flora and intense hues. Anyone wandering through the Jardin Majorelle will immediately notice the dominant color of the garden. Buildings, walls, stairs, fountains and pillars shine in a beautiful intense cobalt blue. This shade of blue has since become known under the name "Majorelle blue" and creates a wonderful color composition with the purple of the bougainvillea and the green of the vegetation. Anyone wandering through this wonderful facility should definitely shoot holiday photos!

One of the main attractions of Marrakech, the Jardin Majorelle can be reached with the city's official sightseeing buses.
